Heritage to auction collections at Long Beach

More than 500 coins are included in the Oak Collection of American Colonial coins, the set that anchors Heritage Numismatic Auctions

More than 500 coins are included in the Oak Collection of American Colonial coins, the set that anchors Heritage Numismatic Auctions’ Sept. 21-24 Signature Auction at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo in Long Beach, Calif.

Among the highlights of the collection is a 1662 Oak Tree twopence, graded AU-53 by Professional Coin Grading Service, and a brown 1723 Rosa Americana penny, graded MS-62 by PCGS.

“The consignor of the Oak Collection has been pursuing American Colonial coins for nearly half a century,” said Greg Rohan, president of HNAI. “He bought his first piece moe than 45 years ago, seeking the excitement of owning an important piece of early American history.”

The sale also holds Part I of the Thomas D. Wolfe Collection of American Type coins.

“Mr. Wolfe’s collection,” said Rohan, “covers the range of American numismatics, from half cents to gold territorials. It includes many classic type coins, and nearly every collector favorite – coins like the 1922 No ‘D’ and 1955/55 doubled die cents; the 1918/7-D, 1921-S and 1924-S Buffalo nickels; the 1916-D, 1942/1 and 1942/1-D dimes; the 1916 Type 1 and 1927-S quarters; the 1932-D and 1932-S Washingtons; and a pair of Gobrecht dollars. His collection is especially strong in Walking Liberty halves and early dollars. These are coins that every collector will appreciate and covet.”

Highlights of the Wolfe Collection include a 1937-D three-legged Buffalo nickel, graded MS-64 by PCGS, and a 1916-D Mercury dime with full bands that is graded MS-61 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp.

Furthermore, there is a 1921-D Mercury dime with full bands, graded MS-65 by PCGS, and a 1901-S Barber quarter in VF-35 condition, as graded by PCGS.

“Thomas Wolfe fell in love with rare coins as a young man,” said Rohan, “and took his first table at the Omaha Coin Showin 1959. That same year he decided to become a professional dealer in better-quality antiques, rather than specializing in numismatics.

“While he continued to buy and occasionally sell coins for his personal collection, numismatics was approached much more as a hobby than as a business.”

In addition to the Oak and Wolfe collections, the Long Beach Signature Auction will feature the Ken Arnold Collection, Part II of the William Bickel Collection, Part I of the Daniel D. Biddle Registry Collections of Washington quarters, Part II of the Alan Bingel collection of gold and silver ingots, the William A. Harmon Collection of U.S. half dimes, the Robert Leach Collection of Washingtonia, the Allan W. Mays, Sr. Collection of “Snow” variety Indian cents, Part VI of the Larry Rausch Collection of Errors and the William Waste Collection.
