Early and Bust half dollars stand out among the array of rarities available in Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers? Feb. 9-11 Long Beach Coin Expo auction.
?The Long Beach auction,? said Heritage President Greg Rohan, ?is especially strong in Early and Bust half dollars, including a very desirable 1797 Draped Bust Small Eagle ,O-101a, half dollar, certified Fine 15 Professional Coin Grading Service.?
That coin, one of only 3,918 minted, is expected to be a featured item in this, Heritage?s 56th Official Auction of the Long Beach Coin Expo.
Highlighting the 4,209 Signature lots is a Mint State 1783 Nova Constellatio copper with Pointed Rays and Large ?US,? certified MS-62 Brown by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., and a 1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves, in MS-65 Star condition according to NGC, that is perhaps the finest known, according to the cataloger.
Another highlight is an 1849 Mormon quarter eagle, K-1, certified AU-55 by PCGS.
Heritage expects a pair of reeded edge half dollars to draw heavy interest. A Condition Census 1838 reeded edge half dollar is one of only five examples certified MS-66 by NGC. There?s only one finer, according to the cataloger.
The cataloger also writes that a reeded edge example from 1836, certified MS-63 NGC, displays amazing eye appeal.
Heritage officials say the auction is also particularly strong in the gold coins of Charlotte and Dahlonega, featuring coins from Part Two of the Carolina Gold Collection plus additional highlights from other consignors. Included is an 1860-D gold $1, graded AU-58 by PCGS that comes from a mintage of 1,566 pieces and an 1839-D $2.50, graded MS-62 by PCGS that is one of four with a grade of MS-62. Only three are considered finer, according to the cataloger.
?Long Beach also offers many wonderful Morgan dollars,? said Steve Ivy, Heritage co-chairman. The Leslie E. Lunsford Collection is rated #7 Current Finest Morgan Dollars Basic Set (Circulation Strikes) on the PCGS Registry.
Proof gold highlights from the Long Beach Signature Auction include an 1861 $1, in Proof-65 Cameo condition according to PCGS and an 1872 $1, graded Proof-67 Ultra Cameo by NGC.
