Among top pieces in Heritage Auction Galleries? May 9-11 sale are a 1927-S Standing Liberty quarter and 1797 large eagle $10 gold piece.

The quarter, graded MS-65 Full Head by Professional Coin Grading Service, is one of nearly 100 Standing Liberty quarters to be offered, another being a 1916 graded MS-67 Full Head by Numismatic Guaranty Corp.

As for the gold piece, in MS-63 it is one of only three 1797 large eagle examples to merit that grade from NGC, with none finer, according to sale catalogers.

Heritage is official auctioneer of the Central States Numismatic Society convention. The sale will be held in the same location as the convention: the America?s Center, 701 Convention Plaza, St. Louis, Mo.

The sale is strong on top-grade U.S. type coins and early gold, with most high-power pieces slated for the May 10 Platinum Night session.

One featured item is a 1776 Continental dollar in pewter with misspelled word ?CURENCY,? graded PCGS MS-64. Catalogers report that nine are known in this condition, with two graded finer.

Also, a discovery piece, the newly designated Overton 130 1806 Bust half dollar with pointed 6, stem, graded NGC VF-30, is on offer from the Hoosier Discovery Collection consignment. Heritage senior cataloger Mark Borckardt identified this variety in late January.

An 1838 Gobrecht dollar with Gobrecht?s name omitted, graded NGC Proof-64, will cross the block. Among later dollars, Morgans include a proof 1895, NGC Proof-67 Ultra Cameo, a proof 1896, NGC Proof-68 Ultra Cameo, and an 1899 in NGC Proof-68 Cameo.

Mercury dimes include the famous 1916-D, this one in PCGS MS-66 Full Bands. The lot description notes that 18 carry this grade, with six finer.
The 120 or so Buffalo nickels in the auction are headed by a 1913 Type 1 in PCGS MS-68.

Gold offerings include an 1855 gold dollar in PCGS MS-66, an 1812 half eagle in PCGS MS-65, an 1827 half eagle in NGC MS-66 and an 1858 eagle in PCGS MS-64.

Also offered is an 1879 $4 Stella, PCGS Proof-66 Cameo.

More than 500 double eagles will be up for bids, among them a 1907 High Relief flat rim Saint-Gaudens graded PCGS MS-66 and a 1909-D in the same grade. Two 1929 examples are offered, both PCGS MS-64.

Territorial gold includes a couple of Humbert $50s, one PCGS XF-45 and the other in a Numismatic Conservation Services holder marked AU details, repaired.

Consignments to Heritage?s Central States sale include the Palakika Collection of type coins; the Cary and Cheryl Porter Collection of more than 200 classic commemoratives, a set currently ranked on the NGC Registry as the second finest; the Pacific Coast Mint Error Collection, including a triple-struck, reverse rotated 1887 $3, an 1855-C $5 with reverse die cud and a pattern 1850 three-cent silver (Judd-125 original) with a capped die; the Hoosier Discovery Collection of early federal coinage; the Encinitas Collection; the Southland Collection; and Part 2 of the Stecher Collection.

With more than 5,200 lots in the sale, this story can only touch on a few highlights. The entire sale can be viewed online in the coins section of www.ha.com.

A separate multi-session Heritage sale of paper money is also being conducted.
