Called ?The finest example we have ever handled in 50 years? by the cataloger, the piece is graded MS-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service.
?Only one finer is graded MS-66 in a Texas collection,? according to the cataloger.
Goldberg?s sale takes place May 28-31 in Beverly Hills, Calif. The sale features U.S. coins and paper currency, and world and ancient coins.
Among U.S. coins, other highlights include a 1794 silver dollar, BB-1, B-1, that Professional Coin Grading Service graded at VF-35. Featuring light to medium uneven gray toning on both sides, the coin?s estimated value is $200,000 to $240,000.
In the same pricey neighborhood is a 1797 gold $5 Capped Bust small eagle with 16 stars that?s expected to bring in $225,000 to $250,000. The piece is graded MS-61 by PCGS. The cataloger says it is ? ... the finest and the only Mint State example graded at PCGS.? Other six-figure U.S. coins include an 1867 Shield nickel with rays, graded Proof-66 Cameo by PCGS.
In all, the sale features 5,300 lots with an insured value of $11 million.
