Steinberg’s, Inc. has issued the Summer 2012 edition of its “Gold Coins of the World” price list, nearly all of which is made up of newly listed items.
A standout in the ancient group is a Greek Pontic Kingdom gold stater, ND, Mithradates VI (120-63 B.C.E.) struck in the name of Lysimachos. The obverse bears a diademed head of Alexander the Great, and the reverse features Athena seated left on the throne with trident below. From the Callatis Mint and graded AU from Numismatic Guaranty Corporation, it lists for $1,650.
Commanding attention from Argentina is an 1889 Tierra del Fuego 5 gramos. The name “Popper” is centered over crossed hammers and pickaxe within shaded circle on the obverse, and the denomination is shown within a shaded circle on the reverse. Graded MS-65 – the finest graded by NGC – it carries a price tag of $11,000.
From Brazil is a 1723-M 10,000 reis of Joao V that has a cross with “M” at angles on the obverse and crowned arms with the value on the reverse. Graded NGC AU-58, its price is $9,950.
German collectors will be interested in a Prussia 1909-J proof 20 mark of Wilhelm II. Graded PR-65 Deep Cameo by Professional Coin Grading Service, it is available for $5,500.
