Goldberg bids almost $28 million

A 1796 Liberty Cap cent took top honors at $690,000 at the Goldbergs Pre-Long Beach sale Sept. 14-16 in Beverly Hills.

A 1796 Liberty Cap cent took top honors at $690,000 at the Goldbergs Pre-Long Beach sale Sept. 14-16 in Beverly Hills.

The sale garnered a total $27,983,709, including buyer’s premium and buy-backs.

The coin, from the Ted Naftzger Collection, listed as 1796 S-84 Liberty Cap PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown, and has a PCGS population of one with no finer.

The top lot from the Ray Rouse Collection was a half cent 1796 C-1 R6 Fine-15+ Fine-15 Plus that brough $345,000.

Tied for third at $241,500 each were a 1 cent 1803 S-243 R2 Stemless Wreath PCGS graded MS 66 Red 7 Brown from the Naftzger Collection and a 1863 $20 gold Liberty NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo from the Ohringer Family Trust Holdings.
