Gold rose to a closing price of $536.50 per ounce in the London market Dec. 12 and then retreated, the popular metal trading around $510 Dec. 14.
At one point on Dec. 11, the trading price spiked above $540 an ounce.
With gold trading at the $510 level, a Liberty Head or Saint-Gaudens $20 coin piece contains about $493.50 worth of gold. A $10 eagle dated 1838-1933 contains just over $245 worth, a $5 from that period about $123 and a $2.50 nearly $62 in gold metal. All of them trade for more than bullion values.
