War hero, senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole was given a Congressional Gold Medal Jan. 17 at a ceremony in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

Badly wounded in 1945 during the Italian campaign as an Army soldier during World War II, he was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star with an Oak Leaf Cluster.

His wounds were severe. His lengthy recovery was incomplete. Mobility of his right arm is limited, and his left arm is number.

Overcoming the physical obstacles, he represented Kansas in Congress for 36 years, first as a member of the House of Representatives and then the Senate.

He was nominated for President by the Republican Party in 1996.

The Mint said Dole served as national chairman of the World War II Memorial Campaign, established the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas to encourage bipartisanship in politics, and is a lifelong champion for the disabled.

The medal's obverse carries a portrait of Dole, while the reverse holds one of his quotations.

A three-inch bronze is priced at $39.95. The 1.5-inch version is $6.95. There is a $4.95 handling charge.
