Gold liked best in set

When it comes to the Star-Spangled Banner commemorative $5 gold coin, collectors like it better as part of a two-coin proof set with a silver dollar thrown in than when it is sold separately.

When it comes to the Star-Spangled Banner commemorative $5 gold coin, collectors like it better as part of a two-coin proof set with a silver dollar thrown in than when it is sold separately.

During the first week of sales ending March 12, buyers grabbed 6,164 of these two-coin proof sets as compared to 3,103 individual proof gold coins and 2,355 individual uncirculated coins.

This preference for the set wasn’t due to a lower combined price either.

The two-coin proof set at $555 is actually a nickel more expensive than the two proof coins ordered separately.

No matter how they purchase them, collector demand for gold $5 coins is far less than demand for the silver dollars.

Buyers took 44,479 of the proof silver dollars for $49.95 each during the first week they were available and 18,763 of the uncirculated dollars for $44.95 each.
