Gold Eagle Sales Start Slow

“Enthusiastic” is probably not the word to describe buyers of the 2012-W uncirculated gold American Eagle coin when it went on sale June 28. In the first four days of the offer, 1,949 coins were taken. This result might indicate that demand for the 2012 coin will be even weaker than demand was for the 2011 issue, which had a final sales number of 8,822.

On the upside, though, future collectors might look at the low mintage figures and push up prices on the secondary market. In that case, today’s buyers will be described as having “foresight.”

This is the fifth in the 2011 series of online coin seminars.

In the meantime, buyers from the Mint are paying $1,828 each for the 2012-W pieces, a price that can change weekly as gold bullion prices fluctuate.

Check the U.S. Mint’s website at www.usmint.gov to order or to find the latest price. Orders may also be placed by telephone at (800) USA-MINT.
