Gold American Eagles continued to be hot as the end of January approached. Sales were up by 53 percent from the same month a year ago.
The U.S. Mint reports 124,000 ounces of gold American Eagles were sold in January 2016, compared to 81,000 ounces in the same month in 2015. Buyers have taken 89,000 2016-dated one-ounce pieces, 23,000 half-ounce, 36,000-quarter ounce and 145,000 tenth-ounce 2016 coins. Sales of 2016 one-ounce gold Buffaloes came in just under January 2015 levels, standing at 34,000 compared to 34,500. While the Mint made 6 million silver American Eagle coins available in January 2016, just 5,954,500 were taken. This compares to 5,530,000 sold in January 2015.
