An 1860-O Liberty Head $20 gold piece will be among the highlights of the Summer FUN auction to be conducted July 9-10 & 12 by Heritage Auction Galleries in West Palm Beach, Fla.
It is part of an extensive date and mint section of gold $20 coins that will be offered.
The coin is graded AU-58 by the Professional Coin Grading Service. The cataloger says that the coin is one of the more challenging Southern double eagles, but does not have the “stopper” status of the 1854-O and 1856-O.
Its surfaces are described as vivid yellow-gold with minor emerald and honey-orange overtones.
An 1859-O $20, also grading AU-58 by PCGS, is called a better strike than ordinarily seen with bold obverse stars and strong hair. The surfaces have “considerable medium yellow-gold luster.”
An 1866-S gold $20 without the “IN God We Trust” motto on the reverse is graded AU-53 by PCGS.
The Population Report notes that there are seven coins in AU-53.
An AU-58 example of the 1882 double eagle the catalog notes is the rarest Type 3 business strike. The coin is graded by Independent Coin Grading.
The coin is described as having “attractive gold patina imbued with splashes of mint-green on the obverse portrait.”
Over 300 lots are Liberty Head $20s.
Another highlight is a Proof-63 Ultra Cameo 1891 with a star designation and a CAC sticker. Mintage totals just 52.
Other gold coins in the auction include a Proof-65 cameo 1879 Flowing Hair Stella $4 gold piece. The coin is graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. and it is described in the auction catalog as having “lovely green-gold color” that accents the “virtually flawless surfaces.”
An MS-62 octagonal Panama-Pacific $50 coin highlights the gold commemoratives offered in the sale. The PCGS-graded coin has “butter-yellow luster,” according to the catalog.
Morgan dollars will also feature prominently in the Heritage auction. A top lot among them is an 1886-O grading PCGS MS-65 formerly in the Jack Lee collection.
The catalog notes there are only three coins grading MS-65 and none finer. This coin has predominantly white surfaces, as noted by the cataloger.
