Remember the roll and bag coin dealers? It takes quite a bit of effort to do so nowadays.
There are few left compared to when I got my start in the 1960s.
Back then they were looked upon as agents to help collectors get the hard to find “D” mint coins out East and the elusive “P” mint coins out West.
They provided this service year in and year out and you could order older dates as well.
What could be better?
Well, times have changed.
Nowadays collectors are demanding the Mint make sure that all coins of all mintmarks be at their local bank on demand.
It was never this way before. It isn’t likely ever to happen.
Why the snarly attitude?
Maybe its the water we’re drinking.
But then again, maybe it is the lack of those friendly and helpful roll and bag dealers who used to help us get the coins we needed at reasonable prices.
I had an e-mail from someone living in Spencer, N.Y., last week who said he had seen all the 2011 coins but the Presidential dollars in his change.
If anyone can relaunch the roll and bag service to collectors, perhaps he could, or someone else could check out Spencer, N.Y. as a source of supply.
