The Theodore Roosevelt National Park quarter was officially introduced Aug. 25 at the Painted Canyon Visitor Center near Medora, N.D.
An audience of 900 people, including 400 children, saw a host of dignitaries including “Teddy” himself, participating in the event.
“This coin serves to memorialize the 26th President for his enduring contributions to the conservation of our nation’s resources, especially those found here in Theodore Roosevelt National Park,” said Rhett Jeppson, United States Mint Principal Deputy Director.
Jeppson was joined by Sen. John Hoeven, Rep. Kevin Cramer, National Park Service Deputy Regional Director Patricia Trap and Theodore Roosevelt National Park Superintendent Wendy Ross.
After the ceremony, each of the 400 children who wanted one received a new quarters free.
Adults were able to purchase up to 10 rolls each for the $10 face value. The First State Bank of Golva, N.D., exchanged $18,000 in D-mintmark quarters, the Mint said.
A special postal cancellation designed by Chuck Taylor was in use at the Medora Post Office by those who wanted to mark their rolls in a special way for the first day of issue.
The new quarters are being sold in roll and bag quantities by the U.S. Mint at its website at www.usmint.gov.
