There were lots of activities for this year?s 1,300 attendees to enjoy at this year?s Georgia Numismatic Association 42nd Anniversary Coin Show, held June 2-4 at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton.
Highlighting the activities was the appearance of Suzanne Royal, who designed the artwork for the Georgia state quarter.
The show kicked off Thursday night with a dealer barbecue supper. More than 140 dealers enjoyed hardy portions of barbecue, baked beans and potato salad. Auction lot viewing got the show started Friday morning, with Affiliated conducting the first of two sessions that night. The prices realized for both sessions were almost $200,000.
The Region IV Early American Coppers Club met Saturday morning. About 20 children attended the Young Numismatist program. Royal spoke to them about designing the Georgia quarter and she signed autographs in the afternoon, on donated quarters that had been encapsulated by the ANACS grading service.
Seminars on deep mirror proof-like dollars by ANACS grader Randy Campbell and Tennessee Merchant Scrip by Dennis Schafluetzel were well attended.
Al Adams was honored at the GNA board of directors annual dinner. Adams? company, Gold Rush Gallery, sponsored the Join Your Local Coin Club booth at the American Numismatic Association National Money Show in Atlanta. More than 135 people received a free one-year membership in a Georgia coin club of their choice, compliments of Adams.
There were three awards given to Young Numismatist?s exhibits and three in the senior category.
The show closed at 3 p.m. Sunday with a drawing for two gold coins and a proof set. Glenn Garrison won a 1913 gold sovereign; Bill Curtis won an 1853 $1 Liberty Head gold coin and Melvis Lybrand won a 1956 proof set.
