An error 2007-W platinum American Eagle quarter-ounce coin where FREEDOM on the reverse is frosted instead of having a mirror surface is being auctioned by GreatCollections on its website. Ending date is April 27.
This is just the second known example of this on the quarter ounce coin.
It is graded Proof-70 Deep Cameo by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
"Only 21 were minted and this is the second one discovered,"said Ian Russell, president/founder of GreatCollections.
The variety was discovered in 2011. The U.S. Mint confirmed that 21 of the error were produced of the quarter ounce and half ounce. Twelve coins were produced of the one-ounce. This is the only coin graded by PCGS for any of the three denominations. PCGS includes it in their Top 100 Modern Coins Registry Set, where it is ranked No. 16.
"The coin is being sold unreserved and initial spirited bidding has taken the bid to over $25,000," Russell said, "ensuring a new PCGS record auction price for the platinum series. We are always proud to be the auction company of choice for U.S. coin rarities."
