Legislation calling for a commemorative coin program in 2016 honoring the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, was introduced May 10 in the U.S. Senate by Ohio senator Rob Portman.

The bill calls for 50,000 gold $5 coins, 400,000 silver dollars and 750,000 clad half dollars.

Surcharges of $35, $10 and $5, respectively, would go to the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the purposes of financing the construction of a new building and renovating existing facilities.

The legislation notes the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened Sept. 7, 1963.

There is only one co-sponsor thus far. The rules require two-thirds of the Senate membership to signal their support before it will be brought up for a vote.

A House of Representatives version of the bill introduced in February has 205 co-sponsors, which is not quite half the membership of that body.

The proposed issue is not tied to any anniversary.
