The Flushing, N.Y., Coin Club conducted its 4th Annual Competition Night Sept. 11. After an opening that included a moment of silence in honor of those who lost their lives in the 9/11 tragedy, the good-natured exhibit competition began.
Exhibits covered the range of numismatics: coins, communion tokens, currency, sunken treasure literature and a series showing Australian mint varieties.
Ralph Calindo was named the People’s Choice winner for his Columbian Exposition exhibit. He was awarded a copy of the out-of-print Walter Breen encyclopedia.
Of special note was an “In Memory” photo poster celebrating the YN work of the late Larry Gentile, a longtime FCC member who died in March.
Also on display was a Buffalo nickel exhibit by YN Joshua Gaugler. It featured a photo of Gaugler standing at the James Earle Fraser sculpture of Teddy Roosevelt at the entrance to the Museum of Natural History in New York. He also described his visit to Stack’s in Manhattan to view a 1937-D three-legged Buffalo nickel, where Arthur Blumenthal gave him a 1937-D with four legs.
