First Lady Michelle Obama was given The Gateway Coin Club of Merced’s 2006 University of California at Merced bronze medal to commemorate her historic May 16 commencement address to the first graduating class of the recently opened institution.

She was given the medal as a token of the University’s appreciation, according to Gateway member Craig Blake, who is credited with designing the piece.

Blake designed the medal for the 2006 annual Gateway Coin Club medal program. It features a representation of the symbol of the University of California at Merced.

One-hundred silver and 300 bronze medals were originally struck. The silver medals are sold out, but some bronze medals remain for sale at $6 each plus $4 postage and handling.
