ANACS made the find Jan. 20.

Paul DeFelice, vice president of marketing and client relations at the third-party grading service in Englewood, Colo., said the error came in as part of a bulk submission for certification.

“It was discovered during a pre-screening of the coins for MS-69 and -70 examples as well as identifying the edge lettering type,” he said. “It graded MS-69.”

DeFelice said ANACS certified about 1,000 of the Native American enhanced uncirculated dollar coins, which were sold only as part of the set, which had a mintage of just 50,000.

“With the low mintage, you have to imagine that the error will be rare,” DeFelice said.
