Eighty-one gold coins from the famous Eliasberg collection will highlight an auction slated for Oct. 17 by Scotsman Auction Co. at the Silver Dollar and Rare Coin Expo in St. Charles, Mo.

Among the highlights are a 1930-S Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece graded MS-65 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp.

The coin was sold as Lot 1071 in the October 1982 auction by Bowers and Ruddy.

Catalogers note that there is one coin finer graded by NGC and five finer by the Professional Coin Grading Service.

Only 50-60 examples survived, the catalogers also point out, and this was due to the existence of a small European hoard.

Another highlight of the sale is the finest known 1862 gold dollar graded by NGC as Proof-67* UCAM. The catalog notes a mintage of 35 with perhaps half that number surviving.

The coin is described as having deeply mirrored fields and heavily frosted devices.

An NGC-Proof-66 1880 Flowing Hair gold Stella $4 gold coin will also be sold. There were just 15 proofs struck of this coin, which the catalog says “exhibits considerable cameo contrast between the obverse field and devices though the depth of the mirrors is perceptibly less on the reverse, suggesting an interesting marriage between a freshly prepared obverse die and a reverse die that had already seen use.”

Gold rarities are not the only coins going on the block in this 1,272-lot auction. Among other lots are such items as a 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent in ANACS photo-certified MS-63 condition.

There is a 1955 doubled-die Lincoln cent grading PCGS MS-63 Brown and there are three different 1972 double dies, including two sold together.

Among Morgan dollars are seven lots of 1889-CC coins in various circulated grades. Nine circulated 1893-S dollar represent this key date.

An NGC Proof-66 cameo 1896 dollar represents the higher end of the grading scale in the Morgan dollar lots offered.
