A 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Willow Tree shilling, the Clark-Wurtzbach-Wiseman specimen, will highlight a 1,500-lot auction to be called Sept. 21-22 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pa., by Bowers and Merena Auctions.
The sale is the official pre-show auction for the first Whitman Philadelphia Coin and Collectibles Expo.
Called an extremely rare type, the AU-58 piece is the finest certified by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
“This particular example is superior to most and represents an important find for the specialist,” said Steve Deeds, president of the firm.
Another highlight of the sale will be a 1776 Continental dollar in pewter. It is the EG FECIT variety and is graded MS-64 by PCGS with a Certified Acceptance Corp. sticker.
The cataloger notes that there are only four examples that are finer of a total population of 10 graded pieces.
Among federal issues, an MS-66* 1932 Saint-Gaudens $20 gold piece will earn a top spot. Graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., the firm notes that there are only 75-95 pieces known in all grades.
In the currently popular Lincoln cent series a 1922 “No D” cent grading MS-64 Brown by NGC will go on the block. The catalog says the coin, FS-401 (FS-013.2), Die Pair II, has a strong reverse.
