The U.S. Senate on May 25 approved S. 633, to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of veterans who became disabled for life while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.
They also gave the thumbs up to S. 2784, a bill to award a congressional gold medal to Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, in recognition of his many enduring and outstanding contributions to peace, non-violence, human rights and religious understanding.
The 2010 date on the coin, a silver dollar, would honor disabled veterans with a $10 surcharge imposed. A maximum mintage of 500,000 would be allowed. Senate action came just before the Memorial Day recess honoring America?s fallen heroes.
House action and presidential signatures are still required.
