U.S. Mint associate director of manufacturing Richard Peterson has been named Mint deputy director.

In that capacity, Peterson will also serve as Mint acting director.

Treasury Secretary Rosie Rios made the announcement Jan. 25 in a memo to Mint employees.

“Dick brings a wealth of manufacturing experience to this position and has an excellent rapport with the teams at each Mint and headquarters,” she wrote.

His experience with each of the production facilities and his private sector background “will enable the Mint to move forward in 2011 until a new director is nominated by the President and confirmed by the senate.”

Rios said she will continue to remain involved in major decisions.

Former Director Ed Moy and Acting Director Andy Brunhart resigned in January.
