Dates set for Nebraska quarter

First strike ceremony scheduled for March 13 at Denver mint, with launch event slated for April 7 in Lincoln, Neb.

Dates and locations have been set for the first-strike ceremony and the official launch of the Nebraska state quarter.

The first striking is scheduled to take place March 13 at the Denver Mint. At press time, no more information was available regarding the event.

As for the launch ceremony, that event will be held Friday, April 7, at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. School groups are invited to take part in the celebration, which begins at 9:45 a.m.

?This quarter is a reminder of the vitality, spirit and determination that has long been a trademark for our state,? said Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman, who will be joined by the state?s First Lady Sally Ganem.

U.S. Mint Acting Director David Lebryk will be on hand for the launch.
The governor will also take part in April celebrations scheduled to take place at the University of Nebraska at Kearney?s Foster Field beginning at 12:15 p.m., and Five Rocks Amphitheatre in Gering, Neb., at 1:30.

A committee, co-chaired by Ganem, has been planning for the quarter?s release and is distributing Mint educational materials to schools across the state.

The quarter features a pioneer family traveling by covered wagon and the historic landmark Chimney Rock. Examples will be given to those age 18 and under attending the launch.

Rolls of the new quarter and commemorative sets produced by the Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation will be available for purchase at the launch.

School groups interested in attending a launch celebration should contact Ann Masters in the Education Commission-er?s Office at (402) 471-4816.
