The Annual Samuel Dorsky Symposium on Sculpture will this year feature tributes to Marcel Jovine.
Dr. Alan M. Stahl, curator of medals at Princeton University was asked to give a presentation on the ANS's 125 Anniversary Medal, as he has a conflict, he has asked me to deliver his presentation as well as add my recolations as a member of the Ad-hoc committee which selected Jovine's other medal design for the anniversary.
The name of Marcel Jovine (1921-2003) should be familiar to U.S. commemorative coin collectors, as he designed the Constitution Bicentennial Gold, as well as the reverse for the 1988 Olympic Gold.
However for the common man he has a very successful career design toy models - the Visible Man and the Visible Woman are examples as well as as the Blessed Event doll for Ideal and a series of Avon bottles. For the uncommon man he sculpted bronze race horses (such as the 1978 triple crown winner Affirmed) for the owners.
The Symposium will take place on Friday March 20th, at the Time & Life Building, Rockefeller Center, 1271 Avenue of the Americas (at 50th St.) 2nd Floor, from 9-6, with a light lunch break.
To make reservations call (212) 764-5645 Ex. 10.
