Copper in auction
Large cents from the Dan Holmes collection will be among the highlights of Ira and Larry Goldberg Auctioneers’ May 30-June 3 auctions at the Crowne Plaza Beverly Hills in Beverly Hills, Calif.
This is the second part of the Holmes Collection to be offered and it leads off the series of auctions on May 30. Going on the auction block in this portion will be the middle dates of the large cent series.
Among the highlights will be an 1834 large cent, N-7, graded Proof-64 Red Brown by the Professional Coin Grading Service.
An EF-45 1818 cent, N-4, an 1830 cent, N-9, in VF-30 that the cataloger says is the second or third finest known and an 1835 cent, N-9, in EF-40+ that is called the finest of three known are some of the other highlights.
Among the gold rarities will be an 1842-C $5, which was produced at the Charlotte, N.C., mint.
A Brutus gold aureus will be a highlight of over 1,000 lots of ancient coins. Brutus stabbed Julius Caesar on the floor of the Roman Senate in 44 B.C. Afterwards he and Republican forces battled and lost a bid to control the Roman state.
Also in the sale is a collection that features the 12 Caesars in gold.
Over 1,500 lots will be in the world section of the auction series.
