Come to Iola and celebrate history
When Numismatic News first appeared almost 58 years ago, Oct. 13, 1952, it changed a lot of collector lives across the United States. First and foremost among these was the life of the paper’s founder, Chet Krause.
When I was first drawn into its orbit in 1969 it certainly changed my life. Little did I know then that one day I would be in charge of the paper.
The fact that the paper was published in Chet’s home town of Iola, Wis., dramatically impacted this small village in central Wisconsin. Economic growth followed.
Iola’s population “zoomed” from 800 to 1,367. If you include the “suburbs” of the surrounding townships, the population growth in percentage terms is even more dramatic.
Chet’s many friends and neighbors are going to gather to celebrate this history together.
In a special ceremony at 2 p.m. on Oct. 2, the Iola Historical Society plans to unveil an historical marker to tell the story of Numismatic News. It will be erected at the house where Chet produced the first issue.
The ceremony itself, though, will be at the society’s buildings and grounds on Depot St. (You never know about the weather and there is abundant parking there.) The plaque will then be placed on site afterward.
Chet himself plans to be at the event.
