V.E. Augspurger of Des Moines, Iowa, has been asking about the whereabouts of the 27 coins for years. A retired state employee, he helped arrange a display of the coins nearly 40 years ago.

Jeff Morgan, a spokesman for the museum, acknowledged that the coins are not in their designated storage spot, but it?s unclear whether they were misplaced or stolen.

The coins are copper trial strikes made as presentation pieces to let the U.S. Mint show what the coins for the next year were going to look like.
Anyone with information about the coins is asked to contact the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
