A bill to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of veterans who became disabled for life while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States was introduced Oct. 1 by Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D.

 S. 2119 was introduced with 24 co-sponsors and referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs.

The proposal calls for mintage of not more than 350,000 $1 coins in 2010. Each coin would be traditional silver dollar size and composition. The coins would be legal tender, but not intended for circulation.

The bill says that the West Point Mint should strike the coins. The U.S. Military Academy has been on the site since 1802.

Design requirements for the dollar must be emblematic of the design selected by the Disabled Veterans? LIFE Memorial Foundation for the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial.

House passage of a similar bill came May 15 on a 416-0 roll call vote.
