Gold coins, including six Clark, Gruber & Co. pieces struck in Denver, Colo., and an 1835 proof $5 from the John J. Pittman collection, highlight Bowers and Merena Auctions? Aug. 16-19 sale.
The B&M auction is the official auction of the 2006 American Numismatic Association World?s Fair of Money convention to be held in Denver.
?It?s sort of a homecoming for these historic frontier-era gold coins,? said Steve Deeds, president of B&M.
The half dozen Clark, Gruber & Co. gold coins of 1860 and 1861, in denominations from $2.50 to $20, include a Pikes Peak design $10 gold piece.
?We?ll also have a virtual treasure trove of proof gold ... including one of only two known examples in private hands of the 1835 half eagle. It?s from the legendary collection of former ANA president John Pittman and is graded Proof-68 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation.?
Other proof gold in the sale includes 1906 Liberty half eagle, NGC Proof-66 Ultra Cameo; 1908 Indian quarter eagle, NGC Proof-67; 1869 Liberty eagle, NGC Proof-67 Ultra Cameo; and 1914 Indian eagle, NGC Proof-66.
Bowers and Merena?s ANA sale also features several consignments from name collections.
Lincoln cents from the Anne Kate collection include a 1909-S VDB graded MS-67 Red by Professional Coin Grading Service, as well as a 1914-D, PCGS, MS-65 Red; 1914-S, PCGS MS-66 Red; 1917, PCGS MS-67 Red; 1922 No D with a strong reverse, PCGS MS-64 Red Brown; and 1955 doubled die, PCGS MS-65 Red.
Buffalo nickels from the Richard Hennessy collection include a 1913 Type I, PCGS MS-68; 1913 Type II, PCGS MS-67; 1918/7-D, PCGS MS-65; 1921-S, PCGS MS-66; 1925, PCGS MS-67; 1929-S, PCGS MS-67; 1930-S, PCGS MS-67; and 1935-D, PCGS MS-67.
Standing Liberty quarters from the James W. Lull collection include a 1916 Full Head, PCGS MS-67; 1917 Type II Full Head, PCGS MS-67; 1918/7-S Full Head, PCGS MS-63; 1927-S Full Head, PCGS MS-65; and 1928-D Full Head, PCGS MS-67.
Morgan dollars from the Anne Kate collection include an 1889-CC Deep Mirror Prooflike, PCGS MS-64; 1892-CC, PCGS MS-67; 1893-S, PCGS MS-63; and 1895-O, PCGS MS-62.
The auction will feature many other coins as well as a collection of National Bank Notes.
The three-day sale will be conducted in Room 601 of the Colorado Convention Center, site of the ANA convention.
