Chaco quarters in demand
The public snapped up $13,000 face value in Chaco quarters following its April 26 introduction at a ceremony in Nageezi, N.M. The public snapped up $13,000 face value in Chaco quarters following its April 26 introduction at a ceremony in Nageezi, N.M.
Approximately 500 people came to the Chaco Culture National Historical Park to watch Mint Deputy Director Richard A. Peterson join Park Superintendent Barbara West at a dedication ceremony for a new visitor center.
“As Americans use their new quarter, they will connect to the stories of the ancient Chaco inhabitants and the remarkable feats of architecture, engineering, geometry and landscaping that Chaco Culture National Historical Park represents,” Peterson said.
According to the Mint, the park celebrated its 25th anniversary as a World Heritage Site.
Theresa Pasqual, director of the Acoma Historic Preservation Office, was also part of the ceremony.
The Mint describes the quarter’s reverse design as a view to the west of two elevated kivas that are part of the Chetro Ketl Complex. The design also shows the north wall of Chetro Ketl and the north wall of Chaco Canyon.
There were 175 children in the crowd and they each got a free example of the new quarter.
The Wells Fargo Bank branch of Bloomfield, N.M. sold rolls of the new quarters at their face value.
