Numismatic Ambassador Ray Lockwood died March 29 at the age of 79.
The Marion, Ind., numismatist was given the award jointly with his wife Fran on April 24, 1999, at the Central States Numismatic Society convention in Milwaukee.
Mr. Lockwood was a past president of Central States 2000 to 2002 as well as the current education director and member of the organization’s board of governors.
His profession was teaching. His booming voice earned him the job of emcee at many a Central States awards breakfast.
Mr. Lockwood was active in the Marion Coin Club. He had been a longtime treasurer and chairman of its annual show. The club gave him an honorary life membership. Fran earned one as well.
He was a past president of the Indiana State Numismatic Association. This organization gave its highest honor, the Founders Award, to Fran and to him.
Back in 1999, he was credited with having revitalized the ISNA Young Numismatists program.
Until recently, in addition to his many other duties, he could be found in the exhibits area assisting Fran at the Central States convention.
The Chicago Coin Club noted that he was a collector of many numismatic subjects, including polymer bank notes. At the club’s Nov. 21, 2015, meeting held in conjunction with the PCDA National Currency and Coin Convention, he gave a well-received presentation on this subject. The next day, he chaired the CSNS Numismatic Educational Symposium titled “Tales of Gold, Greed, Gangsters and Wartime on the Prairie.”
He is survived by his wife. Condolences can be sent to her at: Fran Lockwood, 2075 E. Bocock Road, Marion, IN 46952-8788, or by email at franlockwood@aol.com.
