A 1794 Liberty Cap cent and a 1921 double eagle brought in the big money as Stack’s September 2005 sale realized nearly $3.5 million.

The Sept. 7-8 sale featured U.S. gold, silver and copper coins, and paper money and was marked by strong Internet bidding and a sizeable audience, according to a Stack’s press release.

The final total of $3,484,821 includes the 15-percent buyer’s fee.
The 1921 $20 gold piece, graded brilliant uncirculated by sale catalogers, sold for $120,750, as did the 1794 Liberty Cap cent, Sheldon 26. An Eliasberg specimen, the cent was graded MS-65 by the firm.

“This specimen is sure to be the highlight of a high-end variety, date or type set,” wrote the cataloger. “As a testament to the superior quality of this example, it is the specimen that Louis Eliasberg chose to represent the date in his world famous collection.”

As for the 1921 double eagle, it is one of only 20 such pieces in BU, according to the cataloger. Professional Coin Grading Service has certified 90 examples in all grades. Other highlights included a pewter 1776 Continental Currency dollar in uncirculated condition that attracted $92,000, and a 1793 Liberty Cap cent, S-13, graded VF-20, that realized $53,475.
