During the first four days of availability, collectors purchased 4,110 proof 2012 Buffalo 1 ounce gold coins.
Sales began March 15.
In comparison, when the 2011 proof went off sale, buyers had taken 25,802 pieces.
Issue price of $1,960 is subject to change due to fluctuating prices of gold bullion. There is no limitation on the number of coins that can be ordered.
The Buffalo is struck at the West Point Mint and has a “W” mintmark. It is made of 24-karat, or .9999 fine gold, and it features the famous James Earle Fraser design originally used on the nickel 1913-1938.
The Mint says the Buffalo proof gold coin “is presented in an elegant hardwood box with a matte finish and a faux leather inset. It is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.”
