Buffalo sales stampede to 100,000

Gold proof American Buffalo coin sales continue to advance.

American Buffalo proof gold one-ounce coin sales reached 100,000 in early July, according to Mint sales figures dated July 3.

This represents one-third of the 300,000 maximum possible as being sold.

When the coin went on sale June 22, some 50,000 pieces were snapped up in the first 24 hours. The pace of sales has slowed since then.

The new coin has been surrounded by hobby excitement springing from memories of the sellout of the Buffalo commemorative silver dollar that sold out quickly in 2001. Both that coin and the new gold piece use adaptations of the Jame Earle Fraser nickel design.
