A National Coin Week celebration for children was held April 19 at the Brockton West Branch Library of Brockton, Mass. About 28 people attended.

Head Librarian Karen Arnold was key to making the event happen, said organizer Richard J. Hand Jr.

Hand gave a talk about coin care, history, grading and the responsibilities of a collector. Groups of children participated in hands-on activities such as identifying and placing U.S. and world coins in holders.

West Side Stamp & Coin of Walpole, Mass., donated coins and reference materials for the event. Author Scott A. Travers donated a copy of his book, Coin Collecting Survival Manual. The U.S. Mint and Numismatic News also supported the event with donations.

All attendees received a 2008 Monroe dollar and an Oklahoma state quarter. Among the prizes given away were a Canadian quarter collection, numismatic magazines, an ANA junior membership and a coin collecting kit.

?Brockton, Mass., National Coin Week 2008 was a success because of all the team players? efforts,? said Hand.
