Brain Teaser

The old style German lettering is one of my problem areas. Even though I can read German it has always been difficult when the lettering is in the old Gothic or fraktur style. However when the Germans get fancy and artistic with this style of lettering they really leave me puzzled. I have copies of two style sheets which I keep handy but even with these when I run into a medal like the one illustrated below I am never quite sure. I think the top letters are a D and I or J . Any one know for sure? My guess is D(eutscher) I(infantry) for the top letters. The rest is easy Landwehr Verein New York and that the 1911 date as the year the group was established.
