The Whitman Coin & Collectibles Baltimore Expo and the Greater Houston Coin Club’s Money Show of the Southwest jointly announced Feb. 10 that they will swap their traditional dates for their November and December 2011 shows, respectively.
Baltimore needed to make the change because of a convention center scheduling conflict in 2011.
The shows’ promoters have been working together to assure that the two major shows would not conflict with one another, they said.
Whitman Expo was advised by marketing organization Visit Baltimore that it was being bumped from its normal November show date in 2011 by what it called an “all-city” event. It was decided that the only satisfactory date for the Baltimore show is Dec. 1-4, 2011, but that was the Houston Money Show’s usual first weekend of December date.
“Swapping the shows’ dates made the most sense,” said David Crenshaw, Whitman Expo general manager. “This is a great example of how communication should work between show promoters. Not only does it make our jobs easier, it also eliminates conflicts for our dealers, and ultimately serves the entire collector community.”
“While our show has been growing nicely and has attracted strong dealer support, there is no way that we would even consider competing with the very popular Baltimore show,” said Carl Schwenker of the Greater Houston Coin Club. “It just made good business sense to work with Baltimore.”
The new dates for the Houston Show will be Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 16-18, 2011.
According to Schwenker, the Houston Show contacted and advised representatives of the Santa Clara, Calif., show of the Baltimore and Houston date changes.
“Thankfully, we were told that they hadn’t set their 2011 date as yet,” he said. The Santa Clara show is normally held on the first or second weekend of November.
