The coin was provided by the Army Historical Foundation, which is spearheading a $200 million capital campaign to build the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Va. The Army is the only service branch without a national museum.
The Military Academy at West Point will use the coin for all Army home football game coin tosses during the 2011 season. Examples of a copper-clad half dollar commem will be presented to the Most Valuable Player at each home game during the Black Knights’ 2011 season.
These coins, along with a $5 Army gold coin, are available for sale from the U.S. Mint online at www.usmint.gov until December.
By congressional authorization, a portion of the proceeds from the U.S. Mint’s sales of the coins goes toward construction of the museum.
