A silver 2011 Army commemorative coin was used during the ceremonial coin toss at the Sept. 27 Army Black Knights’ home football game. The coin was provided by the Army Historical Foundation, which is spearheading a $200 million capital campaign to build the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Va. The Army is the only service branch without a national museum.
The Military Academy at West Point will use the coin for all Army home football game coin tosses during the 2011 season. Examples of a copper-clad half dollar commem will be presented to the Most Valuable Player at each home game during the Black Knights’ 2011 season.
These coins, along with a $5 Army gold coin, are available for sale from the U.S. Mint online at www.usmint.gov until December.
By congressional authorization, a portion of the proceeds from the U.S. Mint’s sales of the coins goes toward construction of the museum.
