Arizona picks final state quarter designs

Five design narratives have been submitted to the U.S. Mint by the Arizona State Quarter Commission for the state

Five design narratives have been submitted to the U.S. Mint by the Arizona State Quarter Commission for the state?s quarter that is scheduled for release in 2008.

Three of the narratives include the Grand Canyon and two the saguaro cactus.

One narrative is of the Grand Canyon and the sun, another the Grand Canyon, saguaro cactus and the sun, and a third the saguaro in a desert setting.

Other recommendations were Navajo Code Talkers, the Marines who used an unbreakable code during World War II based on the unwritten Navajo language, and explorer John Wesley Powell on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

There were no images rendered of the narratives by the state. After U.S. Mint artists devise their designs based on the narratives, they will be reviewed by the federal Commission of Fine Arts and the Citizens Coin Advisory Committee. The final approved drawings will then be sent back to Arizona in 2007, where Gov. Janet Napolitano will make the final design decision.
