ANR takes coins, printing plates to Atlanta

A selection of U.S. coins and about 150 printing plates from the American Bank Note Co. archives will be offered Oct. 5 in Atlanta by American Numismatic Rarities.

The 375-lot sale begins at 6 p.m., leading off with coins such as a 1926-S Saint-Gaudens $20 graded MS-65 by Professional Coin Grading Service.

Morgan dollar collectors will watch bidders chase an 1896 Morgan dollar graded Proof-68 Ultra Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., and a 1903 Morgan also in NGC Proof-68. A 1901 gold $10 graded PCGS Proof-64 Deep Cameo joins an 1862 gold $1, PCGS Proof 65 Deep Cameo, and an 1878 $3, PCGS MS-66, to be sold.

The ABNC archive material to be auctioned in Atlanta follows a Southern and Civil War theme, from printing plates for bank notes and scrip to vignettes to advertising items.

Included is a four-subject steel plate for obsolete notes from the Bank of Selma, Ala., followed by a 12-subject plate for scrip from the city of Selma, Ala.

Portrait vignettes include Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln, among others, and other vignettes show the Battle of New Orleans, Battle of the Ironclads and various capitol buildings of the South, as well as scenes of riverboats and cotton production.

One large plate, 26 x 20 inches, shows a champion trotting horse.

Advertising items range from a Coca-Cola ad from sometime after 1916 to a Kentucky Fried Chicken ad.
