Off the market for two decades, an 1854 Kellogg gold $20 piece is returning to the auction block.
Graded MS-64 by Professional Coin Grading Service, the coin will be one of the featured items in the American Numismatic Rarities March 14-15 sale of the New York Connoisseur?s Collection that precedes the Baltimore Coin and Currency Convention.
The cataloger for the sale describes the piece as ?A simply extraordinary specimen, displayed at recent conventions to the wonderment of seasoned numismatists that are usually quite difficult to impress.?
Continuing, the cataloger writes that it ? ... is considered by many to be the single finest circulation strike Kellogg $20 in existence.? Another specimen was most recently offered for $1 million, according to the cataloger.
A number of collections are featured in the auction, which takes place at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel, at 202 E. Pratt St., in Baltimore. Call (410) 547-1200 for directions.
There are two sessions: one on March 14 at 6 p.m. and the other at 2:30 p.m. on March 15.
Lot viewing takes place March 12-15 in the hotel?s Homeland Room.
Session 2 highlights include the Jung 1795 gold eagle, graded MS-63 by PCGS. Of it, the cataloger writes, ?The color is rich, the lustre is gem-quality, and the intense mint bloom is really incredible.?
There is also an 1834 Classic Head Crosslet $5, graded MS-64 by Numismatic Guaranty Corp., that the cataloger says is among the finest known, and a PCGS Proof-65 Cameo1879 $4 gold Stella.
Headlining Session 1 is a 1794 half dime in MS-64 condition, according to PCGS. The cataloger writes, ?As lovely a 1794 half dime as we can recall seeing, an impressively vibrant and lustrous specimen ... ? that last appeared at auction in 1970.
