ANA seeks Morgan $1s for classes

Donations of Morgan silver dollars to be used in hands-on grading courses conducted by the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminars in Colorado Springs, Colo., are being sought by ANA.

Donations of Morgan silver dollars to be used in hands-on grading courses conducted by the American Numismatic Association’s Summer Seminars in Colorado Springs, Colo., are being sought by ANA.

A general appeal was made in early April following a gift of 83 coins from former ANA governor Michael Fey.

“The ANA and the Morgan dollar collector and dealer community have a common interest in educating newcomers, as well as advanced numismatists, about the many benefits of collecting and studying silver dollars,” said Fey, a longtime instructor at Summer Seminar. “The problem we face in teaching courses on this topic is the huge inventory of Morgan dollars needed to do a thorough job.”

Donors will benefit as in-kind donations are tax deductible.

Gifts will be recognized in print in The Numismatist, ANA’s monthly journal, and online at www.VAMworld.com/anaproject.

The website spells out how to make a donation and it also features a list of what coins would be most useful to Summer Seminar.

“Being able to actually handle Morgan silver dollars during our Summer Seminar courses will only enrich the quality of instruction and make for a better learning environment,” said Douglas Mudd, curator at the Money Museum.

The Society of Silver Dollar Collectors and the National Silver Dollar Roundtable have been enlisted to help.

Fey also donated numerous VAM reference books to the ANA’s Dwight Manley Numismatic Library.

Morgan dollar minting varieties are listed according to VAM numbers.
