An American Numismatic Association Presidential Award was given by ANA Gov. Joseph E. Boling to Larry Smulczenski at the Military Payment Certificates Fest held March 25-27 in Port Clinton, Ohio.
Smulczenski is a long-time organizer of the MPC Fest auction among many other hobby related activities.
The fest had an attendance of approximately 55. It was the largest registration yet in its 12-year history.
There were 32 collector presentations at the fest covering military numismatics from World War I to the present – bonds, medals and camp chits were some of the items touched upon.
Included in the program was a “re-enactment” of a military poker game (won yet again by Rachel Feller) and a “MPC March Madness” round with numismatic questions, which was won by Boling. A donation auction was also held for the scholarship fund, which this year assisted four students to attend the MPC class at the ANA’s Summer Seminar.
Another highlight of the weekend included a talk by Lawrence Malkin, author of Krueger’s Men, the story of Germany’s World War II Operation Bernhard counterfeiting scheme of British bank notes and a visit by Hans Walter, one of three surviving Operation Bernhard inmates.
