Jeff Shevlin has been appointed as the new executive director of the American Numismatic Association.

That is good news for the ANA. The position has been vacant since August of last year.

He will assume his duties at headquarters June 18 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He is known to the hobby as a collector of so-called dollars. I receive his e-mails on the topic regularly.

He is also a writer, speaker and exhibitor.

More importantly, though, is his 28 years in the management of non-profits. The ANA will benefit from this experience. There are 34 employees at headquarters and a budget of nearly $6 million.

He certainly jumps in at the beginning of the busiest time of year for the ANA.

Two week’s of Summer Seminar begin June 23. Attendees will probably want to learn about him as much as the topics for which they signed up.

Then the annual convention begins Aug. 7 in Philadelphia.

If the ANA’s schedule provides any breaks for him it will be in the area of the budget. The budget year does not begin until Nov. 1, so he will have some time to work on the numbers.

As long as the budget stays balanced, the membership will be supportive as the board of governors and Shevlin work to chart a new course.
