A World War I commemorative dollar to be struck by the U.S. Mint in 2017 won the support of the American Numismatic Association board of governors.

Rod Gillis, ANA numismatic educator, asked for the board’s support noting that commemorative coins honor veterans of the Civil War, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, but no coinage exists to honor World War I soldiers.

The board took action when it met Nov. 30 via conference call.

A request from Executive Director Larry Shepherd to capitalize museum assets was defeated on a 3 to 5 vote with President Clifford Mishler abstaining.

Shepherd said ANA staff recently completed a valuation of the collection, so it seemed an appropriate time to put the valuation on the books.

“It’s hard to understand why you wouldn’t want to put the major asset of your organization on your balance sheet,” Shepherd said.

Board members Jeff Garrett, Walter Ostromecki Jr., and Wendell Wolka voted in favor of the capitalization. Voting against it were Joseph Boling, Thomas Hallenbeck, Alan Herbert, J.P Martin and Scott Rottinghaus. Mishler abstained.

The board agreed to spend $3,500 to engage the services of its audit firm, BiggsKofford, to accept and verify nominations for board of governors. It also supported drafting a bylaws revision to allow electronic voting in the future.

Shepherd reported that onsite visits to possible future convention sites are taking place, including visits to Dallas, Atlanta and Sacramento.
