While trying to research some medal values on eBay I came across a very unusual and interesting medal currently being offered for sale. I emailed the owner asking for some copyright free scans to use here and since I have not yet received a reply I am posting the item number here; 360306808743 so that any interested readers may see the medal.
The medal was issued by the small Scottish coastal resort town of Dunoon. That would be the first Scottish local issue WWI medal that I have ever heard of. The medal is gold and marked “15ct” and “.625” which is also a first for me. The medal is in the shape of a radiant star topped off with a British Crown. On the front in the center is the multicolor town coat of arms above the motto “Forward”. I wonder who used this motto first, Dunoon or Wisconsin? Encircling the arms is a blue enamel circle inscribed “TOWN OF DUNOON FOR MILITARY SERVICE.” The reverse is engraved “Lieutenant Quartermaster John Disselduff Awarded Military Cross 30th Dec. 1916.” Now this is truly unusual; a medal honoring a soldier for being awarded another medal!!
