“People of the Book” is the theme of the American Israel Numismatic Association’s 2011 medal.

The term, “People of the Book” (ahl al-kitab) is a Muslim one – found in the Quran – that refers to the people of the Torah whom Moses led into the promised land and to whom that land belongs. Today, it also refers to Jewish readers of Judaic-related texts, in addition to holy texts.

The 32 mm, golden-brass medal was designed by Paul Kahane. The obverse features a person reading The Shekel, AINA’s bi-monthly magazine about Biblical, Judaic and Israeli coins, medals, tokens and paper money. To the left is the text, “Israel shall be called the ... ‘People of the Book.’”

The reverse features the AINA logo, designed by Nathan Sobel.

Just 900 medals were minted in proof-like quality by The Highland Mint and sent to paid-up AINA members. The medal will be sent to new 2011 members who send $18 dues to AINA, P.O. Box 20255, Fountain Hills, AZ 85269. The medal is also available for $3 each plus $2 per order for shipping.
