2007 is a long way away, but the deadlines for submitting designs for 2007 state quarters have either already come and gone or are coming up fast.

Sept. 9 was the date for Idaho residents to turn in narrative descriptions for the state’s 2007 quarter. The Idaho Commission on the Arts will review all designs and trim the field to 10 finalists to be presented to Gov. Dirk Kempthorne.

In Washington state, the deadline was July 31. Residents who wished to participate were asked to write a 100-word or less description of what they wanted to see on the quarter. The Seattle Times reported that 1,150 submissions were received by the Washington State Quarter Advisory Commission.

A deadline of Sept. 30 was set for Gov. Christine Gregoire to present three to five design concepts to the U.S. Mint.

As far as Wyoming is concerned, the Wyoming Arts Council pored through the 1,300 design ideas it received in late April. Gov. David D. Freudenthal picked five and sent them to the Mint in July. Four feature the state’s iconic image, that of a bucking bronco, which is the state’s trademarked logo. The fifth design showcases Yellowstone National Park’s Old Faithful Geyser.
With regards to Utah, on July 29 design concepts were submitted to Gov. Jon Huntsman by the Utah Quarter Dollar Commemorative Coin Commission.

Currently, the Utah commission is in the process of picking three to five concepts to present to the Mint in September. To follow the proceedings, visit the commission’s Web site at http://arts.utah.gov/quarter/html.

Utah residents will get a chance to comment on quarter possibilities when the Mint returns graphic depictions of the designs in early 2006.

Montana residents were supposed to have submitted their state quarter ideas by Aug. 31. The Montana Quarter Design Commission will review the suggestions and then residents will get a chance to vote for their favorite.
